Exceptionally rare bacon settle, this carved oak settle
with a bacon larder above was used to store dried meat in the 18th
century, which of course was kept inside the dwelling. While the larder
is definitely 18th century, the settle may be a little later or was
rebuild in the 19th century. The official description is therefore
rare 18th century bacon settle with later adjustments. Few bacon settles
have even been recorded never mind seen and I believe it is very unlikely
that there is another one in Ireland |

The entire inlaid with shamrocks, eagles, red deer and scenes from

Nowadays it is the exception to find large pieces of Killarney wood
furniture. Most pieces are in private collections or owned by the
state. Muckross House probably has the greatest collection which can
be viewed by the public) |

Exceptionally rare bacon settle, this carved oak settle
with a bacon larder above was used to store dried meat in the 18th
century, which of course was kept inside the dwelling. While the larder
is definitely 18th century, the settle may be a little later or was
rebuild in the 19th century. The official description is therefore
rare 18th century bacon settle with later adjustments. Few bacon settles
have even been recorded never mind seen and I believe it is very unlikely
that there is another one in Ireland |
